Desde la Ley Nº 20.417 (2010), dependen del Ministerio de Medio Ambiente Anteriormente, el órgano administrador de esta categoría de protección es el Servicio Nacional de Pesca (SERNAPESCA), dependiente del Ministerio de Economía y eran regidas por la Ley General de Pesca (Nº 18.892 de 1989)
